(PR 434/26)
A 43-year-old man and his 5-year-old son from St Paul’s Bay, lost their lives last night after being hit by a boat while on a small dinghy, in Gnejna Bay.
The accident occurred shortly after one this morning (0100hrs), when the Police were informed that assistance was needed after a boat, driven by a 43-year-old man residing in Rabat, probably hit a dinghy in the middle of the sea.
Members of the Civil Protection Department were immediately informed, who began a search at sea in the area indicated for the persons who were on the dinghy.
After a short while Civil Protection officials found the father and son lifeless, with the corpses being lifted onto the quay and then taken to the mortuary. Meanwhile, the dinghy, which suffered considerable damage, as well as the boat involved were brought ashore.
Further investigation revealed that just moments before the incident, the father and son had disembarked from another boat anchored off in Ġnejna Bay and were taking a spin on a small dinghy. However, it was at this moment that the collision between the boat and the dinghy occurred.
Magistrate Dr Joe Mifsud LL.D is conducting an inquiry, while Police investigations are ongoing.
