Two men arrested shortly after committing a robbery

Early this morning, at around half past midnight (00:30hrs), the Police received a report of a robbery from a shop in Birkirkara Road, San Ġwann.

From preliminary investigations, it resulted that two men, armed with a sharp-pointed weapon, entered the shop and demanded money from the cashier, a 26-year-old man residing in Fgura. At that moment, the cashier pushed a display stand towards the aggressors, but one of them swung the weapon and struck the worker on his hand before they fled the scene running.

Searches began immediately, and it resulted that the two suspects had escaped in a vehicle that had been stolen a short while earlier from Qormi.

Shortly after 1am (01:00hrs), during searches in Naxxar Road, San Ġwann, Police officers spotted the same vehicle parked, with two men inside who matched the description of the alleged robbers.

A 51-year-old man from Santa Venera, who was in the driver’s seat, and a 44-year-old man from Ħal Qormi were arrested. During subsequent searches, the Police found a knife, gloves, and various tools.

Later, the cashier was certified as having suffered slight injuries.

Magistrate Dr. Joseph Mifsud LL.D was informed and appointed an inquiry, while Police investigations are still ongoing.
