Two arrested in connection with alleged drug importation

A man and a woman were arrested during the night after various substances suspected to be drugs were found in their possession, with a market value of around €650,000.

The two persons, a man from Montenegro aged 27 years and a Serbian woman aged 27 aswell, were in a Volkswagen driven by the man. They were stopped shortly after arriving in Malta by catamaran from Sicily on suspicion of drug trafficking and importation from Italy.

The car was taken to the Police garage and from searches carried out, in false compartments in the bottom and back of the vehicle, several packets containing drugs were found. In all, around 15KGs of suspected cannabis grass, 3KGs of suspected cocaine as well as hundreds of pink pills suspected to be ectasy were found.

Members of the Customs Department assisted the Police during this operation.

Magistrate Dr Joe Mifsud LL.D was informed of the discovery who appointed an inquiry, while the two persons are being held under arrest at the Police GHQ lock-up in Floriana.

Police investigations are ongoing.
