Two apprehended in relation to suspected cocaine smuggling

(PR 587/24)

Two Italian individuals were apprehended Tuesday night for carrying approximately four kilograms of suspected cocaine, valued at around €500,000.

Both individuals, a 46-year old woman and an 18-year-old man, were in a Mercedes being driven by the woman. They were detained shortly after their arrival in Malta by catamaran from Sicily for suspected involvement in drug trafficking and importation from Italy.

Consequently, the car was brought to the Police garage and after conducting searches, four packets of drugs, each weighing about one kilogram, were discovered in a false compartment at the bottom of the vehicle, along with €1,000 in cash.

Members from the Customs Department assisted the Police in carrying out this operation.

The two individuals are currently detained at the Police lock-up in Floriana and are expected to appear in Court, while Police investigations are ongoing.
