Traffic Inspections Across Malta and Gozo

(PR 1/25)

The presence of the Police on various roads across the country through traffic inspections has led to yet another year during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday period where Maltese roads were free from serious traffic accidents. Traffic inspections are not limited to this time of year but are intensified during these days to curb abuses of traffic regulations.

During these inspections, the vast majority of drivers complied with traffic regulations. However, where they did not, immediate action was taken, and citations were issued as necessary.

In the last ten days, between December 22 and last night, as the end and beginning of a new year were celebrated, over 170 road checks were conducted. During these, more than 4,700 vehicles were stopped, and over 400 citations were issued.

Among the violations issued were drivers caught driving without displaying their license, using mobile phones while driving, and drivers not wearing seat belts. A number of vehicles were also towed because the driver failed to present a valid license.

In some of these inspections, speed guns were used, resulting in more than 85 citations for excessive speed. Where there was reasonable suspicion, Police dogs conducted vehicle searches, and breathalyzer tests were carried out, with 11 individuals testing positive.

In addition to these inspections in various localities, the police also distributed educational material encouraging people not to drive if they drink. This material was placed, among other locations, on parked vehicles.

The Police Force spokesperson stated, “These road inspections were coordinated by the Police Force with the assistance of officials from Transport Malta. This road inspection exercise will not stop at the end of the New Year festivities but will continue throughout the year to ensure safer roads in Malta and Gozo. The Police Force thanks everyone for their cooperation so that during these festive days, we had safe roads without any serious incidents.”
