(PR 399/25)
In view of the fact that one can abuse off speed during the night – as roads become clearer and speed increases during driving – the Police force has also continued to intensify traffic controls during these times.
During traffic controls carried out in June and July between eight in the evening and four in the morning, around 500 fines were issued for speeding. These vehicles were caught driving at a speed of more than 15 kilometres per hour above the maximum permitted limit.
There were drivers who were caught driving at a speed of 159 kilometres per hour, 156 kilometres per hour and 148 kilometres per hour in an area of 70 kilometres per hour. Others were caught driving between 111 kilometres per hour and 140 kilometres per hour, in the same 70 kilometre per hour zone.
In an area where the speed is 80 kilometres per hour, a driver was caught driving at 124 kilometres per hour; while in an area of 60 kilometres per hour, drivers were caught driving between 103 kilometres per hour and 118 kilometres per hour. Other drivers were caught driving between 159 kilometres per hour and 121 kilometres per hour in an area where the maximum speed is 50 kilometres per hour.
The Police force remains committed to continue with regular traffic controls at all times of the day, with the aim of safeguarding the safety of all those who use our roads.
