Romanian arrested in connection with string of thefts

(PR 40/25)

Intensive investigations in connection with a series of thefts from various shops selling mobile phones have led to the identification of one of the alleged thieves who forms part of an organised crime group.

Investigations revealed that the thefts occurred during the summer months of 2023, with thieves breaking open the front door of the shops and within seconds emptying shelves from mobile phones and escaping from the scene.

In all, the amount stolen in electronic devices reaches €180,000.

The relentless investigations revealed that those involved are probably Romanians and a European Arrest Warrant was immediately issued against them. In recent days, one of the thieves was identified and was arrested in Romania through the warrant and in recent hours was extradited to Malta.

This arrest marks a significant development in the investigation, with the Police continuing to search for the rest of the group’s members.

The man, aged 27 years, is expected to be arraigned in Court in the coming hours.
