Man wanted in connection with a robbery in Sliema extradited from Italy

(PR 378/25)

An Italian man allegedly involved in a robbery that took place in February 2020 was extradited to Malta in recent hours to face criminal charges in Court.

The robbery took place on February 23, 2020, when two people were attacked and robbed by two men, while they were walking in Sir Adrian Dingli Street, Sliema. The two robbers were riding a motorbike and one of them got off, ran towards the victims, grabbed a branded watch from one of them and fled the scene.

The motorbike was later found by the Police near St. George’s Bay, St. Julian’s.

Subsequently, one of the alleged assailants, a 50-year-old Italian man, who was part of this luxury watch theft ring, was arrested and brought to Court on charges of being an accomplice to a robbery. He had not admitted the charges brought against him. Last December, the Italian was found guilty by the Court and sentenced to seven years in prison.

Meanwhile, the other accomplice had fled to Italy, where he was arrested some time later. A European Arrest Warrant was issued, and late on Thursday night, the man was brought to Malta under arrest from Rome, escorted by the Maltese Police.

The Italian will be arraigned in Court today, at around 1100hrs, before Magistrate Dr Charmaine Galea LL.D.
