Man arrested in connection with dangerous driving

(PR 572/25)

A 19-year-old man from Mellieħa is being held under arrest after being caught driving dangerously in Pembroke.

At around 10:30 p.m., while police were patrolling the Pembroke area in connection with Halloween activities, they noticed a BMW being driven recklessly along Triq Tobruk, where children and teenagers were crossing the street — putting them in serious danger.

The police ordered the driver to stop so they could speak to him. Instead, the vehicle sped off at high speed through a residential area, driving on the wrong side of the road and even through one-way streets, where several children and parents were present at the time.

The car continued toward St George’s Bay, where it was abandoned and the driver fled the scene on foot. However, he was arrested just moments later.

The 19-year-old is being held in police custody at the Floriana lock-up and is expected to appear in court today at around noon (12:00 p.m.) before Magistrate Dr Charmaine Galea LL.D.
