Man arrested in connection with alleged cocaine importation

(PR 527/25)

A 37-year-old Greek man was arrested following the discovery of 25 kilograms of a substance suspected to be cocaine, which was about to be brought into Malta from Sicily, with a market value of around €1.5 million.

He was stopped during vehicle checks carried out on cars disembarking from the catamaran on Thursday evening. The man was driving an Opel and began acting suspiciously.

The vehicle was taken to the Police garage, and during searches carried out, 25 packets of the drug were found hidden inside false wooden compartments at the side of the car, with one kilogram of the drug in each packet.

Magistrate Dr Philip Galea Farrugia LL.D was informed of the find and appointed an inquiry.

The man is being held in police custody in Floriana and is expected to be arraigned in court today at around 11:30 a.m. before Magistrate Dr Gabriella Vella LL.D.

Police investigations are still ongoing.
