(PR 217/25)
As the Maltese Police remain committed to fighting organised crime in our country, in recent hours they carried out a successful operation at the Malta Freeport which led to the arrest of a 37-year-old man from Xgħajra.
During surveillance carried out by the Maltese Police at the Freeport together with the assistance of its security officers, yesterday at around six in the morning (0545 hrs), a vehicle which was leaving the Freeport was stopped as part of investigations in connection with drug importation in our country.
Following an inspection of the man’s vehicle, 7 kg of drugs suspected to be cocaine were found. Further searches carried out at the same port led to the discovery of another 28 kg of drugs, also thought to be cocaine with a total street value of around €2 million.
The vehicle’s driver, a man who works at the Freeport, was arrested in connection with the find. Preliminary investigations indicate that the man allegedly hid the drugs at the site with the intention of gradually distributing them into the market.
An inquiry has been opened by Magistrate Ian Farrugia LL. D and Police investigations are ongoing.
The man is expected to be arraigned in Court today before Magistrate Dr. Astrid May Grima LL. D.
