Five persons arrested after assaulting Police officers in Ħamrun

(PR 521/24)

Four Maltese men and a woman were arrested after they assaulted two police officers during the course of their duties in St Joseph High Road, Ħamrun at about 2000hrs yesterday evening.

The Police were assaulted after they issued a contravention for a car which was parked illegally. It was at this point that a number of persons emerged from an establishment and started arguing with the police, who gave orders to maintain public order and for the cooperation of the persons concerned. However, they ignored these orders and caused injuries to officers. Police were constrained to use pepper spray and taser.

More police officers arrived on site and the situation was brought under control. The persons arrested on site are a 42-year-old woman and two men, aged 46 and 44 years. Investigations also showed that there were two other persons who left the scene, two men aged 23 and 33 years, who were involved in this case and who were immediately identified and arrested at their respective residences.

A medical team and an ambulance took the two policemen to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment, where one was certified with grievous injuries and another with slight injuries.

Magistrate Dr Abigail Critien LL.D was informed of this case while Police investigations are ongoing.
