Woman arrested in connection with drug importation

A 26-year-old Colombian woman was arrested at the Malta International Airport in connection with alleged importation of just over half a kilogram of a substance suspected to be ketamine.

Her arrest followed an operation by the Malta Police, assisted by the Customs Department, in collaboration with Spanish and Colombian authorities. This action was prompted by intelligence indicating that the woman was traveling from Spain to Malta and was suspected of being involved in a criminal drug-trafficking ring.

Consequently, upon receiving information that she was due to arrive in Malta last Saturday on a flight from Madrid, the Police conducted inspections of the passengers on that flight.

The operation proved successful; after being identified and stopped, the Colombian woman was found to be carrying two large blocks and a smaller package of the drug in her luggage. The street value of the haul is estimated at slightly over €70,000.

The woman was arrested, and Magistrate Dr Renata Farrugia LL.D was informed of the case and launched an inquiry and appointed several experts to assist in the investigation.

She is being detained under arrest for further investigations and is expected to be arraigned in Court later today.
