Sailor dies after drowning
A 55-year-old Filipino sailor lost his life after falling into the sea while carrying out some work around 15 nautical miles off Marsascala Coast.

The incident happened yesterday when the Police were informed by the Armed Forces of Malta that their assistance was requested after a sailor, while attaching a service boat to a vessel, fell off the same boat as a result of heavy waves.

Preliminary investigations showed that another seaman, a 43-year-old Filipino, jumped into the sea to save the man and, with the assistance of two other seamen, managed to take him on board.

The two Filipinos were brought to shore by the Armed Forces, where unfortunately the 55-year-old man was certified dead, while the other person was taken to Mater Dei where he was later confirmed not to have sustained any injuries.

Magistrate Joe Mifsud LL. D was informed of the case and appointed an inquiry while Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
