Police officer injured during arrest in Valletta

Today, at around 12:30 p.m. (1230 hrs), police officers who were travelling in a service vehicle along St Mark Street, Valletta, were stopped by several individuals and informed that an argument was taking place between two men.

The officers immediately exited the vehicle and found the two men in St Patrick Street. During the course of the argument, both men had fallen a distance of approximately half a storey, from the pavement to a level below the road.

While the police were providing assistance, one of the men, a 32 year old resident of Msida, became aggressive towards the officers. As he was being restrained, he assaulted the officers involved, namely an Inspector and two Constables, resulting in the Inspector being struck on the head.

Additional police assistance was requested, and the man was arrested a short distance away from where the argument had occurred. The other individual involved, a 45 year old resident of Valletta, was also arrested at the scene. Both men were taken to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance, where they were certified as suffering from grevious injuries.

Later, the Police Inspector was also taken to Mater Dei Hospital, while one of the Constables received treatment at a Health Centre. The other police officer was not injured.

Investigations into the case are ongoing.
