Two tourists arrested in connection with dangerous driving and video streaming

Two German men, aged 41 and 39, were arrested after being identified as the driver and the person who filmed dangerous driving, a video which was uploaded on social media.

After the Police received a number of videos yesterday showing a Kia vehicle being driven dangerously on various roads and at different times, an investigation immediately began with the aim of identifying both the vehicle and the driver.

CCTV footage showed the vehicle being identified and intensive investigations showed that the driver was at an establishment in St Julian’s. The Police immediately went to the indicated location, a search was carried out, and two persons were stopped who were in agreement with the description. It resulted that the persons were the driver of the car and the passenger he filmed, and the videos were found on his mobile.

The 41-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, while the 39-year-old passenger was arrested on suspicion of spreading videos showing dangerous driving on social media. This according to the new legal amendments which came into force last March, that those who produce or distribute material which shows people breaching traffic laws with the aim of normalising dangerous driving or urging others to do the same, are committing a crime.

While investigations are ongoing, the two persons are expected to be arraigned under arrest according to procedures.
