Five Maltese men aged between 41 and 63 years, were arraigned under arrested by the Police Anti-Terrorism Unit accused with breaching sanctions imposed on Libya by the European Union (Regulation of the Council of the European Union 2016/44).
Weeks of investigations led to the arrest of the men after the Police received information that a Maltese registered company had allegedly exported two ships to Libya without the authorisation of the Maltese authorities. Apart from the sanction breaches, the operation focused also on a possible money-laundering case.
The men pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them and were granted provisional discharge under several conditions.
Prosecution was led by Superintendent George Cremona and Inspector Omar Zammit.
